The Algorithmic Reasoning Test (RA)

An advanced assessment of logical, algorithmic and analytical thinking

Theoretical grounding and scientific relevance

The Algorithmic Reasoning Test (RA) is a current-generation psychometric instrument designed to investigate the structure and functioning of the higher cognitive processes involved in algorithmic, deductive and analytical reasoning. Situated within the paradigm of fluid intelligence, the RA assesses the ability to operate logically in abstract contexts, to apply sequential rules in solving problems and to adapt cognitive strategies quickly in changing situations. The theoretical model behind the test brings together current perspectives on working memory, executive control and symbolic processing.

The RA answers a pressing need in cognitive assessment: distinguishing individuals with advanced logical potential, able to work efficiently with abstract information, to recognise patterns and to infer rules from complex structures. This capacity is essential in a continually shifting cognitive economy, where the demands of rapid learning, adaptation and informed decision-making grow exponentially.

Structure of the test and psychometric characteristics

The test contains 50 multiple-choice items, each requiring abstract, symbolic or spatial reasoning to be put to work. Administration takes 30–45 minutes. The items are organised so as to assess four major cognitive domains:

  • Numerical reasoning
    Sub-dimensions: recognition of numerical patterns, arithmetical reasoning
  • Verbal reasoning
    Sub-dimensions: verbal manipulation, linguistic and semantic encoding
  • Practical reasoning
    Sub-dimensions: decisional reasoning, spatial reasoning
  • Deductive reasoning (g factor)
    Reflects general logical integration and the capacity for inferential synthesis

Results are reported both visually and numerically, showing individual scores on each dimension as well as the overall cognitive profile. The reporting format makes it easy to integrate the data into clinical, organisational or educational assessments.

Fields of application

  • Professional selection and recruitment: positions calling for logical operation and speed of decision in complex settings (software development, engineering, AI, data analysis, cryptography);
  • Organisational development: the RA supports talent management, leadership development and the identification of employees with high analytical potential;
  • Clinical psychological assessment: useful in identifying executive-function deficits or in profiling abstract logical functions;
  • Psychological research: applicable in validation studies and in cross-sectional and longitudinal research on fluid intelligence, learning and cognitive performance.

Methodological considerations

The test is undergoing advanced standardisation. Interpretation focuses on the dimensions with high values, which reflect the strengths of an individual cognitive style. It is recommended from the age of 14. Administration takes place in digital or printed format, under controlled and standardised conditions. Results are interpreted solely by specialists in psychodiagnosis.

Particular advantages

  • A scalable, standardised assessment of applied logical thinking
  • Differentiated cognitive profiling across four major dimensions
  • A format applicable in several contexts (clinical, educational, organisational)
  • Short administration time and a high informational yield
  • Clear visual reporting, useful in rapid decision-making

The Algorithmic Reasoning Test (RA) offers a valid, flexible and predictive methodological framework for assessing higher cognitive functions. Through its factorial profile, the RA allows a detailed understanding of the capacity for logical problem-solving and is valuable in personnel selection as well as in clinical psychology and cognitive research.

The test is administered and interpreted by an autonomous clinical psychologist experienced in cognitive assessment, and the results are brought together in a clear report, with recommendations tailored to each person’s development goals.

How it works in practice

Psychometric instruments are not used in isolation. At the practice, a test forms part of a complete psychological assessment: clinical interview, choice of the instruments suited to your question, interpretation, a written report and a session in which I explain the results in language you can go on using.
